The launch of the UK/Brazil Season of Culture at the Sala Sao Paulo

The UK/Brazil Season of Culture, which runs until June 2026, kicked off in fine style in Brazil on Sunday 5^th October 2025 with a screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s silent thriller The Lodger (1927) in front of a packed Sala São Paulo, the most prestigious concert hall in the city. The film was accompanied by the São Paulo Jazz Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gustavo Petri, performing a soundtrack by Neil Brand, a British composer, dramatist and recognised expert on silent film. Brand’s soundtrack, commissioned in 2017 to coincide with the BFI National Archive’s sumptuous restoration of what was Hitchcock’s third feature film, surpasses compositions made for the film to date, in relation not only to suspense (The Lodger introduces audiences to Hitchcock’s signature “wrong man” trope) but also the nods to the Music Hall tradition in the film. This was the first time the new score had been performed in Brazil.

The Lodger is one of two Hitchcock silent films to star Ivor Novello (the other is Downhill, also released in 1927), the Welsh matinee idol, musical theatre performer and composer who is better known to the contemporary British public as the name behind the Ivor Novello awards, which recognise achievement in songwriting in the UK. Such was Novello’s reputation in 1927 that once he was confirmed as playing the lead, the film’s script had to be changed to downplay the ambiguity surrounding the protagonist’s presumed innocence. In Marie Belloc Lowndes’s novel on which the film is based, suspicion remains on the lead character to the end. Hitchcock would also produce a radio version of The Lodger in 1940. Novello would star in a 1932 talkie remake of the same name: unlike Hitchcock’s critically and commercially acclaimed original, it was a box-office flop.

Hitchcock has long been a favourite among Brazilian cinephiles. The great film critic and film preservationist Paulo Emilio Salles Gomes, writing in 1957, marvelled at the “suspense, surprise and everything that strikes a nerve within the spectator” contained in his films. The Brazilian Film Archive (Cinemateca Brasileira) screened 14 Hitchcock films earlier this year and in 2021 the Banco do Brasil Cultural Centre showcased a huge retrospective of 35 of his feature films and 127 TV episodes.

The event at the Sala São Paulo also marked the first screening of the 2025 iteration of the Mostra Internacional de Cinema, São Paulo’s annual film festival, which this year includes a large number of British productions and industry events linking British and Brazilian film.

The UK/Brazil Season of Culture is being organised as a partnership between the British Council and the Guimaraes Rosa Institute, Brazil’s new cultural diplomacy initiative attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In his introduction to the event Marco Antonio Nakata, the director of the Guimares Rosa Institute, spoke of the wide range of cultural events in store in both the UK and Brazil, with a welcome nod to the activities being organised by our Bridging Worlds project at the University of Leeds.

Lançamento do Ano Cultural Brasil Reino Unido em São Paulo

O Ano Cultural Brasil/Reino Unido, que vai até junho de 2026, começou no Brasil no domingo, 5 de outubro de 2025, com a exibição do thriller mudo de Alfred Hitchcock, O Inquilino (1927), diante de uma lotada Sala São Paulo, a mais prestigiada sala de concertos da cidade. O filme foi acompanhado pela Orquestra Jazz Sinfônica de São Paulo, regida pelo Maestro Gustavo Petri, com trilha sonora do britânico Neil Brand, compositor, dramaturgo e reconhecido especialista em cinema mudo. A trilha sonora de Brand, encomendada em 2017 para coincidir com a suntuosa restauração do terceiro longa-metragem de Hitchcock, feita pelo Arquivo Nacional do British Film Institute, supera as composições feitas para o filme até agora, não apenas em relação ao suspense (O Inquilino apresenta ao público o tropo característico de Hitchcock do "homem errado"), mas também em relação às referências à tradição do Music Hall, o teatro de revista inglês, no filme. Esta foi a primeira vez que a nova trilha sonora foi apresentada no Brasil.

O Inquilino é um dos dois filmes mudos de Hitchcock estrelados por Ivor Novello (o outro é Downhill, também lançado em 1927), o galã, artista de teatro musical e compositor galês, mais conhecido pelo público britânico contemporâneo como o nome por trás dos prêmios Ivor Novello de música. Tal era a reputação de Novello em 1927 que, uma vez confirmado como protagonista, o roteiro do filme teve que ser alterado para minimizar a ambiguidade em torno da inocência do protagonista. No romance de Marie Belloc Lowndes, no qual o filme se baseia, o personagem principal continua sob suspeita no final. Hitchcock também produziu uma versão para rádio de O Inquilino em 1940. Novello fez um remake falado em 1932 com o mesmo nome: ao contrário do original de Hitchcock, crítica e comercialmente aclamado, foi um fracasso de bilheteria.

Hitchcock é há muito tempo um favorito entre os cinéfilos brasileiros. O grande crítico de cinema e preservador cinematográfico Paulo Emílio Salles Gomes, escrevendo em 1957, maravilhava-se com o “suspense, a surpresa e tudo o que mexe com o espectador” contido em seus filmes. A Cinemateca Brasileira exibiu 14 filmes de Hitchcock no início deste ano e, em 2021, o Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil exibiu uma imensa retrospectiva com 35 de seus longas-metragens e 127 episódios de TV.

O evento na Sala São Paulo também marcou a primeira exibição da edição de 2025 da Mostra Internacional de Cinema, o festival anual de cinema de São Paulo, que este ano inclui um grande número de produções britânicas e eventos da indústria cinematográfica que conectam o cinema britânico e brasileiro.

O Ano Cultural Brasil/Reino Unido está sendo organizado em parceria entre o British Council e o Instituto Guimarães Rosa, a nova iniciativa de diplomacia cultural do Brasil vinculada ao Ministério das Relações Exteriores. Em sua introdução ao evento, Marco Antonio Nakata, diretor do Instituto Guimarães Rosa, falou sobre a ampla gama de eventos culturais no Reino Unido e no Brasil, com uma menção  das atividades organizadas pelo nosso projeto Bridging Worlds na Universidade de Leeds.
