Book Launch at Mostra Internacional de Cinema de Sao Paulo

Since the 2008 release of Embodiment of Evil, the third instalment in the famous Coffin Joe trilogy, which began back in 1964 with At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul, Brazil’s audiovisual industry has been producing an increasing number of unsettling, often violent and frequently dystopian films, reflecting the wide-ranging social, cultural, environmental and economic problems the country is facing.

This edited volume by scholars from Brazil, the United Kingdom and the United States discusses a broad selection of Brazilian audio-visual productions released between 2008 and 2022 which, through their use of aesthetic and narrative devices borrowed from horror cinema, shed light on the country’s pressing socio-political questions. Mostly by first-time directors, these productions bear witness to a second ‘Golden Age’ of Brazilian horror cinema and ultimately serve to illustrate, in audio-visual form, the tensions at the heart of Brazilian society.

Laura and I were delighted to be invited to launch the book at Brazilian Cinematheque in Sao Paulo during the Mostra Internacional de Cinema. This is Brazil’s most important film festival and this year, 2025, it is marking the UK/Brazil Season of Culture with a wide range of film and film related activities. Our book, which is a collaboration between UK and Brazilian film researchers, hopefully demonstrates how much academics can contribute to strengthening cultural links between the two countries.

Lançamento de livro na Mostra Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo

Desde o lançamento de A Encarnação do Demonio em 2008, o terceiro filme da famosa trilogia do Zé do Caixão, que começou em 1964 com À Meia-Noite Levarei Sua Alma, a indústria audiovisual brasileira vem produzindo um número crescente de filmes perturbadores, muitas vezes violentos e frequentemente distópicos, que refletem os diversos problemas sociais, culturais, ambientais e econômicos que o país enfrenta.

Este livro, organizado por acadêmicos do Brasil, Reino Unido e Estados Unidos, discute uma ampla seleção de produções audiovisuais brasileiras lançadas entre 2008 e 2022 que, por meio do uso de recursos estéticos e narrativos emprestados do cinema de terror, lançam luz sobre as questões sociopolíticas urgentes do país. Dirigidas principalmente por cineastas estreantes, essas produções testemunham uma segunda "Idade de Ouro" do cinema de horror brasileiro e, em última análise, servem para ilustrar, em formato audiovisual, as tensões no âmago da sociedade brasileira.

Laura e eu ficamos encantadas com o convite para o lançamento do livro na Cinemateca Brasileira de São Paulo, durante a Mostra Internacional de Cinema. Este é o festival de cinema mais importante do Brasil e, neste ano, 2025, celebra a Temporada Cultural Reino Unido/Brasil com uma ampla gama de filmes e atividades relacionadas. Nosso livro, fruto de uma colaboração entre pesquisadores de cinema do Reino Unido e do Brasil, demonstra, esperamos, o quanto o meio acadêmico pode contribuir para o fortalecimento dos laços culturais entre os dois países.
